CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat has advised the governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to amicably resolve problems on sharing of river water, power and other crucial issues as it was the only way out.
There was no other way. The two governments should sit together and sort out outstanding issues. “There may not be immediate solutions, but there will be some understanding between the two States,” he said participating in a Meet-the-Press programme organised by the AP Union of Working Journalists here on Friday.
Mr. Karat expressed concern that bifurcation of the State threw up new problems for the two States. The Centre should honour and fulfil its commitment to provide fair share to Andhra Pradesh in allocation of funds and resources besides ensuring benefits under the special category status as assured by it.
On the Polavaram project issue, he said the CPI (M) was strongly against project in its present shape as it could lead to large scale submergence of tribal habitations and forest lands. The large scale displacement of tribal population was uncalled for and the project should be redesigned so that this massive displacement was avoided.
Replying to a query, he said the Left wing extremism was flourishing in areas such as Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand where such displacement took place. The government should consider socio-economic and other implications to ensure that such developments did not recur.
