Shiva, the one-year-old elephant, which was rescued by forest officials from a farm well in Kuppam, died after a prolonged illness at the S.V. Zoological Park here on Wednesday.

According to the zoo authorities, the elephant was suffering from severe gastric distress and had refrained from taking any food for the past 15 days.

Despite the medical care by veterinary and wildlife experts, the baby elephant contracted an infection in its intestine, leading to its death.

The zoo authorities had also roped in renowned experts such as Dr. Naveen Kumar (Hyderabad) and Dr. Giridas (Trichur, Kerala), but in vain. A post mortem procedure was performed at S.V. Veterinary College later.

The elephant was rescued from a farm well in the Kuppam range of Chittoor West Forest Division in August. The elephant had strayed from its herd and accidentally fell into the well. It was rescued after a massive operation by the forest officials. It was later moved to the S.V. Zoological Park and was named Shiva.
