Registering their protest against the proposed inclusion of Kapus in the Backward Categories (BCs) list, activists from different BC organisations under the aegis of Joint Action Committee of BCs staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Monday. Blocking the roads leading to the Collectorate, the activists staged a sit-in and raised slogans against the State government.
Making it clear that they were severely opposing the proposed move to include Kapus in the BCs list, they wanted the government to withdraw the proposal.
Addressing the activists, convener of the JAC Ch. Venugopal said that the share of the BCs was about 50 per cent.
“If all the BCs join their hands together, it is not going to be a tough task for us to take the reins of the government in the next elections. Now, this is time for us to launch a stringent fight against inclusion of new castes into the BCs list, particularly the Kapus,” he said.
The movement gained importance in the wake of senior Kapu leader Mudragada Padmanabham launching a movement demanding the inclusion of Kapus into the BCs list.
With his movement gaining support from Kapu leaders irrespective of their political affiliations, the BCs now launched an agitation to protect their share in the reservations.
It may be recalled that the TDP made a promise to the Kapus during the election campaign that their long-pending demandswould be addressed once the party was voted to power in the State.
