State Chief Secretary Anil Chandra Punetha exhorted officials to take measure to improve the district’s literacy rate.

At a review meeting with Prakasam District Collector V. Vinay Chand and other district officials, he said, “as citizens and persons holding positions of responsibility it was everyone’s duty to work towards improving the rate. Only a literate society can put an end to child marriages and other social evils.”

He noted the rate had improved to 70%, from 63.53% as per the 2011 census, thanks to consistent efforts of officials. As per the census, male literacy was 73.53% and female literacy 53.4%.

He also asked them to work towards improving the happiness index of the district. “The satisfaction level of people should go up to 95%,” he said.

The Collector apprised the Chief Secretary of the drinking water shortage that was severe in the district, which has had 58% deficit rain since June 2018. He sought release of ₹2 crore for the supply of water by tankers to the western parts, which were the hit worst.
