Six persons, who entered a small water sump in Kasapuram village in Agali mandal, fell unconscious and one of them, K. Karianna, 46, died due to lack of oxygen on Sunday morning.

Madakasira Circle Inspector K. Devanand said that an anganwadi worker Lakshamma was getting her house renovated and her son Ramesh entered the 7-feet deep water sump in which they had stored wooden pieces and his father Karianna stood outside the narrow entry hole. When Ramesh did not respond for a long time, Karianna too entered the sump to help him, but both fell unconscious.

Lakshmamma called four others for help and they too entered the sump one by one only to get trapped there. Meanwhile, other villagers called 108 Ambulance and brought all of them out of the sump, but even before Karianna could be shifted to hospital, he was declared dead. The condition of three others was said to be serious and were getting treated in nearby town in Karnataka.

The Circle Inspector said that the sump was not filled with water and lack of proper support to enter or come out of the sump along with low oxygen levels led to the mishap.
