It’s been an arduous journey for social activist Rishika Sahoo. A native of Odisha, Ms. Sahoo is on a nationwide ‘Save the girl child’ mission on a two-wheeler. Her aim is to create awareness about the need to maintain gender balance and the legal issues pertaining to ultrasound gender test.
Ms. Sahoo launched her tour on September 14 in Bhubaneshwar and arrived at Tirupati in one month after covering Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
From here, she will proceed to Telangana and cover West Bengal, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab and reach Delhi on November 30.
Her effort has been receiving encouraging response from the public, social activists, government officials and the media. “More than the semi-literate, the educated tend to get the gender diagnosed. It is this segment that has to be educated about the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act’,” she said.
Ms. Sahoo also addressed MBA and MCA students of Sri Padmavathi Women’s University and the Rayalaseema Institute of Information and Management Sciences (RIIMS). For security reasons, she refrains from flaunting banners while travelling. Whenever she gets a break, she sits down and meditate, as it helps her stay physically and mentally strong. She plans a grand close for her marathon ride at Delhi on December 1.
