People think fashion is only about clothes and designing them, but they perhaps forget that it is also about adding aesthetic value.

And by coming up with unique creations in clothes, wood, leather and several other materials, final-year students of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) did just that. Their work was on display at the institute on Friday.

Achyut Yadav’s display was among those that caught the eye of some of the visitors. His product designs of portable furniture and bar accessories were inspired by mechanical gears, giving the word fashion an altogether different meaning.

One of the creations by the 22-year-old from Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, was a wooden stand that folds into a laptop bag, making it very convenient to carry around.

Titled ‘Design Showcase and Infinite Ideas-2015’, the exhibition is a display of works in a wide range of areas by 30 final-year students from the Fashion and Lifestyle Accessories and Fashion Communication departments. The event was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Higher Education Kadiam Srihari.

Another interesting display was that of handbags by 22-year-old Aakriti Kaila, who innovative wooden sling bags were based on horoscopes. She had worked for a Delhi-based firm as part of her last semester’s programme. “It took me about four months to come up with these bags. The company tells you what they want, and you have to create designs till they like it,” she explained.

Achyut, who similarly was with Ek Do Dhai, an e-commerce company, is now working with the company for its upcoming new brand, he said.

Other students also displayed their creations in apparel, footwear, handicrafts and other areas. The students are all from the Bachelor of Design course, with different specialisations.
