Nirmala skips special status issue

June 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - GUNTUR:

Union Minister for State for Commerce Nirmala Sitaaraman skirted the contentious issue of granting special status to Andhra Pradesh during the bhoomi puja for Amaravati here on Saturday.

Ms. Sitaraman, who was the lone minister to speak at the public meeting, however, promised that the Central government would give full assistance to Andhra Pradesh to build a world class Capital.

She also said the name Amaravati evoked history and culture and added that the capital city would flourish in the days to come.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also reminded the gathering that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured during his election meetings at Tirupati and Guntur last year that he would extend all assistance to develop the State and also to build a world class capital.
