NGO home evacuated as Krishna rises menacingly

All-out efforts being made to lend a hand to flood-affected people

With the water level rising in the Krishna, about 100 children staying in the SKCV Trust NGO home on the river bund at Bhavanipuram here were shifted to safer places.

“We shifted about 100 children, including 32 students studying in National Child Labour Project (NCLP) School, to other homes,” said SKCV Trust Chairman Sridhar Reddy.

NCLP Project Director D. Anjaneya Reddy said the students were shifted to a home at Gandhinagar and all of them were safe.

Collector A. Md. Imtiaz visited Bhavanipuram, Punnami ghat and other areas and directed officials to shift people staying on the river bund where flood water entered some structures.

Traffic curbs

Officials banned movement of heavy vehicles on the Prakasam Barrage from Friday morning. Flood water entered many temples and guest houses located on the river bund.

Many villages in Chandarlapadu, Kanchikacherla, Ibrahimpatnam and Penamaluru mandals and many areas in Vijayawada city and rural were inundated. Irrigation, police and revenue officials were evacuating people residing in low-lying areas in Ramalingeswar Nagar, Bhavanipuram and other colonies.

Endowments Minister Vellampalli Srinivas visited the affected areas in Ramalingeswar Nagar. Police arranged security along the river bund as a precautionary measure and were not allowing visitors.

Vijayawada Police Commissioner Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire department personnel have been deployed at Bhavani, Punnami and Padmavathi ghats to prevent devotees and visitors from venturing into the river. “We alerted the police stations located along the river bund and ensured several families were evacuated,” Mr. Tirumala Rao told The Hindu .

Krishna district Superintendent of Police M. Ravindranath Babu said an alert had been sounded in Nandigama, Chillakallu and Kanchikacherla mandals. About 40 families have been evacuated.

“Rescue teams have been posted in the villages abutting the Krishna. Sandbags were arranged at many structures and instructions have been given to strengthen the bunds to prevent breaches,” the SP said.

About 85 students staying in Chiguru NGO home located at Undavalli who were shifted to different Child Care Institutions (CCIs) two days ago, were safe, said District Probation Officer K. Bhaskar Rao of the Juvenile Welfare Department.
