Former Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and senior Congress leader Nafeesath Beevi died at a private hospital on Monday.
Nafeesath Beevi was born on March 22, 1924, as the daughter of Abdul Karim and Hawa Umma. She had her education at Pope Pius XI High School at Bharanikkavu; Government Women’s College here; S.D. College, Alappuzha; and Government Law College, Ernakulam. She was enrolled as advocate in 1953 and entered active politics in 1954.
She was elected to the second Legislative Assembly in 1960 from Alappuzha and was elected Deputy Speaker on March 15, 1960. She held the post till September 10,1964.
She had actively participated in the ‘Vimochana Samaram’ and was imprisoned. She had been in the forefront of organising women’s organisations. She had been a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) since 1956. She had also served as a member in the Kerala State Women’s Commission. The body will be brought to Indira Bhavan on Tuesday morning and laid to rest at Palayam Juma Masjid by 3.30 p.m.

Nafeesath Beevi was a leader who followed the Gandhian path and shared a warm and close relation with the Assembly, Speaker N. Sakthan said in his condolence message. Forest Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, and Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar also condoled her death.
