A state-of-the-art modular operation theatre complex, claimed to be the only of its kind in Andhra Pradesh, is getting ready at the Podila Prasad-GMCANA Superspecialty and Trauma Centre on premises of the Government General Hospital here.

The OT complex with four operation theatres constructed with the support from the alumni of Guntur Medical College and Rotary Club of Stockton Delta, Rotary Club of Guntur Aadarsh, is being readied on a war footing for a formal inauguration in February.

GGH superintendent T. Venugopala Rao said that two OT rooms would be exclusively allotted for performing cardio-thoracic surgeries with the support from Sahrudaya Health, Medical and Educational Trust, floated by GMC alumnus Alla Gopalakrishna Gokhale.

The OTs would also be equipped to handle renal transplantation surgeries.

A GO issued on January 22 detailed the division of responsibilities among the trust, the GGH and the government.

The GGH has to provide the services of percussionist, nursing staff and etc. Each OT room has an anaesthesia work station, modern ventilators and pendants to ensure continuous supply of oxygen. Besides, the OT complex would be completely sanitized and even the doors would be operated by sensors.

“All surgeries will be performed free of cost to those having the NTR Arogyasri cards. The government is evolving some mechanism to extend the same benefits to the others too,’’ said Dr. Venugopala Rao.

While the government reimburses 35 per cent of the cost involved in an open heart surgery, 35 per cent goes to the trust, while 45 per cent is allotted to the GGH for providing services including sanitation and services.

The facility is the first of its kind to be developed in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode and is the first major additional facility to the GGH in last 50 years. Podila Prasad, an old student of the GMC, donated Rs.5 crore and the other members of GMCANA too followed suit. The facility was thrown open to public on January 18 by Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan.
