Relatives of Nakka Durga Rao, who died in two-town police station here on Saturday, alleged that he (Durga Rao) died in the lockup and blamed station house officer and Sub-Inspector for his death.
According to DSP P. Sowmyalatha, Durga Rao, a regular offender, was involved in many theft cases. He was released from the Local Sub-jail on May 5 and was again arrested on suspicion by the Two- Town Police at around 3.30 a.m. in the wee hours of Saturday.
“He went to toilet and did not return. When the policemen entered the toilet by force, they found him hanging from one of the rods . Immediately he was rushed to government where he died while undergoing treatment,” the DSP said. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
However, wife, mother and brother-in-law of Durga Rao alleged that death was owing to police harassment and held a dharna in front of the Two-Town police station for more than one hour.
