Land acquisition becomes nightmare for officials

June 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - SRIKAKULAM:

Even as the government has asked the top officials to create a land bank in the district to promote industrialisation and send the details to Hyderabad at the earliest, identification and acquisition of land have emerged as a tough task in the ground level.

With many big industrial projects being lined up for the district, officials are now on their toes to comply the government directive. According to sources, the government needs around 6,000 acres for the construction of Bhavanapadu port in Santabommali mandal alone. But, the revenue officials could identify around 3,000 acres of government land in Bhavanapadu, Santabommali, Marripadu, Rajapuram, Manipuram and other villages. Now, the government has to acquire land from farmers to build the port with 200 metric tonnes capacity.

Further, huge tract of land is needed for the 4,000-MW ultra super critical power project, a joint venture proposed by the Japanese global business giant, Sumitomo Corporation, in collaboration with the AP Genco. However, the move to acquire land for the project in Polaki mandal is facing a stiff resistance from the locals. The land acquisition process for the integrated nuclear park proposed in Kovvada has been stalled, with the lapse of the notification issued two years ago. Establishment of food parks too has remained only on the papers, with the lack of follow-ups on the ambitious proposal.

According to sources, as many as 14,700 acres have been identified for the land bank so far, while the requirement stands at more than 20,000 acres.

“Acquisition of land, especially the private ones, has become a Herculean task as people are vehemently opposing it. ,” said an official.
