The Income-Tax Department swooped down on the Proddatur residence of Putta Sudhakar Yadav, TDP candidate for Mydukur, on Wednesday.

Even as the raid was on and the officials and the TDP circles initially remained tight-lipped, Mr. Yadav told a section of the media that he and his reputed infrastructure company had paid all taxes promptly and had nothing to hide. He called it an ‘election-eve conspiracy’ to defame him and leave his voters disillusioned, while expressing the hope that he would come clean in spite of the attempts to ‘besmirch’ him.

Reddem Venkata Subba Reddy, APSRTC Chairman, staged a protest condemning the raid. He termed the TTD Trust Board chairman as a “man of integrity.”

C.M. Ramesh, MP, reached the spot and asked the I-T officials on whose instructions they were conducting the raids. He sought to know if the Central government had instructed them to target the TDP leaders.

After the team left, Mr. Yadav’s family members reportedly announced that the I-T officials had not seized any property or documents from their residence.
