Over two thousand women and girl students took out a rally from Seshapiran Street to the Gandhi Bomma junction here on Saturday evening. Various dargahs and mosques in Chittoor division had organised the event.

The women, holding pro-hijab placards, raised slogans in support of it, saying “Wearing hijab is our right.” The organisers said that the hijab issue, which had surfaced in Karnataka, had led to the disappointment of crores of Muslims across India and overseas. They demanded that the fundamentalist groups immediately stop targeting the Muslim women and said that strictures against hijab was an onslaught on minorities, their freedom and their ancient culture.

Deputy SP (Law and Order) N. Sudhakar Reddy supervised the rally, which went off peacefully.
