A riverside picnic ended on a tragic note for three engineering students in the Krishna river, and a man and his son drowned in the sea off Ramapuram village near Chirala in Prakasam district on Monday.

The three engineering students, Ankam Abhilash (21), Sai Sekhar and N. Siva Naga Prasad, were in a group of five students of KL University who ventured into the Krishna river for a swim at Pedakonduru village in Duggirala mandal on the Mangalagiri-Tenali road on Monday afternoon. The Deputy Superintendent of Police of Tenali, Ms. N. Sowjanya told The Hindu that the three third-year students waded into the water while the other two, who did not know how to swim, stayed on shore. Not knowing the depth of the water, the three boys may have been sucked into an underwater pit. The other two boys raised an alarm and local villagers informed the police who summoned divers to retrieve the bodies. “The boys could have been lured by the innocuous looking waters,” Ms. Sowjanya said. “They did not know that there were pits caused by digging of sand.” The boys were childhood friends . While four of them belonged to Mangalagiri, M. Srikanth belonged to Nuttaki village. Police later informed the parents and the bodies were shifted to the government hospital at Mangalagiri.

In the Ongole incident, the man and his son were among a group of people who had gone to the beach after attending the 10{+t}{+h}day rituals of a relative who had died. Another person who had ventured out to sea along with the father-son duo was rescued by local fishermen, police said. The deceased were identified as 38-year-old A.Venkateswaru and his son A.Surya (12) of Ganjipalem, near Chirala.
