It turned out to be a prized possession for many. Holding the saree, dhoti and invitation card kit for the Amaravati foundation ceremony, farmers here are an excited lot.

The mood in Nelapadu and Mandadam villages was jubilant, with Ministers and Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) officials visiting farmers’ houses to extend invitations to them for the ceremony. Invitations are being extended to more than 24,000 farmer families who parted with their land for the capital.

“Initially, there were apprehensions among many about parting with lands. Following the government’s assurances, we were convinced,” said Vasireddy Srinivas, a 45-year-old farmer from Mandadam. He parted with seven acres for the capital.

Those who received the invitations said they were gearing up the ceremony. “We feel honoured. By extending an invitation in a traditional way, the government has accorded prime importance to us,” said Aluru Lakshmi Kantamma, who parted with 1.5 acres.

On the quality of saree and dhoti presented to them, the 64-year-old woman said she was happy and liked the ‘parrot green Mangalagiri saree’ presented to her. On her future plans, she said: “Looking forward to the plots to be allotted. Everything rests on that.”

While some are planning to retire, others are keen on continuing farming. “Parting with land is definitely an emotional thing, but we need to be positive and hope for the best. My family will be definitely attending the ceremony,” said Bejawada Narendra Babu, a farmer, who claimed to have parted with 35 acres.

Babu is planning to buy 40 acres in West Godavari district shortly.

“I cannot imagine myself without agriculture. I will continue to do it till my last breath,” said Mr. Babu.

Meanwhile, the government is making all arrangements for farmers to reach the venue. Vehicles are being arranged to transport them from the respective villages to the venue, apart from arranging seats close to the main stage.
