Rattled by the sudden fall in child sex ratio in some mandals in Krishna district, the government has ordered a probe to find out the exact reasons behind the phenomenon.
A team of officials, comprising those from Medical and Health, Revenue and Women Development and Child Welfare (WD&CW) departments and a consultant from Hyderabad, has begun an investigation into the dip in child sex ratio in the district. The team will prepare a report and an action plan by May 27.
According to sources, the average child sex ratio is 935/1,000 (i.e., 935 girls for every 1,000 boys) in the district. However, there has been a drastic fall in female sex ratio in Avanigadda, Nagayalanka and Challapalli mandals.
“The female sex ratio against males is 780/1,000 in Nagayalanka. It is 787/1,000 in Avanigadda and 823/1,000 in Challapalli. The average (i.e., 935/1,000) is recorded in several mandals including Kanchikacherla, Gudur, Vyuuur and Kankipadu,” Women Development and Child Welfare Regional Joint Director (RJD) Suez said.
The team will visit villages, particularly fishermen villages along the coast in the three mandals. The team will inspect scanning centres and private hospitals in the locality, besides taking stock of the visits of pregnant women to the centres and scan reports issued by local doctors and other particulars.
Machilipatnam Revenue Divisional Officer Saibaba held a meeting with the RJD, WD&CW Project Director K. Krishna Kumari, Child Development Project Officers Gayatri and Jaya Lakshmi, Deputy District Medical and Health Officers Sermista and Nirmala Devi on Wednesday.
