Child marriage thwarted

A child marriage was thwarted at Royyuru village in Krishna district and the 28-year-old man was arrested for marrying a 13-year-old girl in Chittoor district on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off that a minor girl was being married off to 22-year-old man at Royyuru, officials of the revenue, police and women’s development and child welfare departments reached the village in time and stopped the marriage.

Vuyyuru Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) Annapurna, Thotlavallur SI Prasad and DCPO Ch. Vijay Kumar along with a VRO visited the village and stopped the marriage, scheduled to be performed at 10 am. “The parents of the bride and bridegroom agreed to be bound over when we explained to them the consequences of a child marriage,” said District Child Protection Officer Ch. Vijay Kumar.
