The Central government has sanctioned ₹420 crore for the first phase of construction of Central Tribal University, which is coming up at Relli village in Vizianagaram district, according to Union Minister for HRD Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’.
Mr. Ramesh was replying to an unstarred question raised by V. Vijaya Sai Reddy of the YSRCP in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
The Union Minister pointed out that the A.P. State Reorganisation Act, 2014, inter alia, envisages establishment of one Central Tribal University in the State. In accordance with it, the State government had allotted a site at Relli village measuring 525.08 acres, which was found suitable by the Site Selection Committee in July 2015. In order to initiate the process of construction, a token amount of ₹10 crore had then been sanctioned, he added. Mr. Ramesh further said there was no proposal for amending the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act, 2007, under which a university was already functioning at Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh.
“For the establishment of a Central Tribal University in Andhra Pradesh, a separate Bill for amending the Central Universities Act, 2009, is being moved in Parliament,” the Union Minister added.
Mentor role for AU
To set the ball rolling, Andhra University was given the status of being the mentor university for the CTU, and it had already begun the admission process for the first batch.
Speaking to The Hindu , AU Vice-Chancellor G. Nageswara Rao said, “Two PG programmes, two integrated courses, and four diploma programmes are being launched from this academic year.”
