Power consumption in the Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh regions of the erstwhile united State was more than that of the Telangana region in the year just passed. This is despite the fact that the two regions, constituting the present Andhra Pradesh State, had endured more load reliefs than Telangana.
According to the year-wise, district-wise consumption and load relief figures submitted by the government of Andhra Pradesh to the Ministry of Power, the 13 districts of A.P. together consumed a total of 35,942 million units of power in the year 2013-14, while the nine districts of Telangana consumed about 35,059 million units.
Load reliefs in the Telangana districts stood at mere 2,458 MU in the year, while the same in the remaining districts together stood at 4,044 MU. Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district certainly stood at an advantage, with load reliefs of mere 175 MU and 107 MU respectively, in sharp contrast with Chittoor at 500 MU or Medak at 477 MU.
Presenting the figures, the AP government disputed the distribution ratio of power generated from Central Generating Stations which allowed Telangana to use 53.8 per cent and AP, 46.2 per cent. The same could be applied to sharing of power from State generating units. The AP government has sought correction in the shares allocated, seeking 49.78 per cent for AP and 50.22 per cent for Telangana.
