People from more than 1.5 lakh households in 3,200 villages in 10 districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Saturdat contributed their mite for the upliftment of the downtrodden on the occasion of the 102nd birth anniversary of Vicente Ferrer, founder of the Rural Development Trust(RDT) in Anantapur.

Vicente Ferrer served humanity with an aim to end poverty and suffering, said RDT programme director Moncho Ferrer at the celebrations held on the occasion at Kundurpi in the district on Saturday.

A programme, ‘India For India movement’, was started on April 9 in 2012 with the slogan “Spandinchu - Saayam Andinchu”, as part of which a total of 40,000 seva hundis were installed in the households of people who liked to donate for the cause.

On completing 10 years of the programme on Saturday, those who participated broke their hundis to donate the amount to help orphaned children, poor persons with disabilities, and malnutrition. About 20,000 government and private employees had been making monthly donations towards the cause.

Through the support of people, the RDT is helping 1,698 orphaned children access education, healthcare, and counselling, Mr. Moncho added.
