They will come into effect from Monday

The reorganisation of Krishna district into two new districts is set to become a reality with the State government notifying the NTR District and Krishna District in its gazette on Sunday. The new districts will come into effect from Monday.

The residuary part of Krishna district with 25 mandals will retain its name, and will be headquartered in Machilipatnam. Four mandals in Gudivada division, namely Kaikaluru, Mandavalli, Kalidindi and Mudinepalli. and four in Nuzvid division, namely Nuzvid, Agiripalli, Chatrai and Musunuru, have been made part of neighbouring Eluru district.

The remaining part of Krishna district, including 20 mandals, forms the NTR District with Vijayawada as its headquarters.

While Krishna has 503 villages, NTR has 321 villages. Both have one municipal corporation each.

NTR district is spread over an area of 3,316 square km and has a population of 22.18 lakh. Krishna district is spread over an area of 3,773 square km with a population of 17.35 lakh according to the 2011 Census.

The 25 mandals in the residuary Krishna district include Gudivada, Gudlavalleru, Nandivada, Pamarru, Pedaparupudi, Gannavaram, Bapulapadu, and Unguturu under Gudivada revenue division, Vuyyuru, Pamidimukkala, Kankipadu, Penamaluru, Thotlavalluru, Movva and Ghantalasala under the newly-formed Vuyyuru revenue division, and Pedana, Guduru, Bantumili, Kruthivennu, Machilipatnam, Avanigadda, Mopidevi, Nagayalanka, Koduru and Challapalli under Machilipatnam revenue division.

The 20 mandals in NTR district include Reddigudem, Tiruvuru, Vissannapeta, Gampalagudem, A. Konduru under the newly-formed Tiruvuru revenue division, Nandigama, Kanchikacherla, Chandralapadu, Veerullapadu, Jaggaiapeta, Vatsavai and Penugranchipolu under the newly-formed Nandigama revenue division and Ibrahimpatnam, Vijayawada Rural, Vijayawada West, Vijayawada Central, Vijayawada North, Vijayawada East, G. Konduru and Mylavaram under the Vijayawada revenue division.

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Commissioner P. Ranjit Basha has been appointed Collector of Krishna district while Civil Supplies Department Director S. Dilli Rao has been appointed as NTR District Collector. The works of the new Collectorate on the premises of the Sub-Collector’s office in Vijayawada are ongoing

Meanwhile, the reorganisation of districts has ended the question of whether a Greater Vijayawada would be formed. With Penamaluru, a major suburb that was earlier proposed to be merged with Vijayawada Municipal Corporation now being made part of Krishna district, the formation of a Greater Vijayawada now seems more or less unlikely, say observers.
