The demand for a unanimous resolution on the creation of a separate Telangana rocked the Legislative Assembly for the second consecutive day on Wednesday forcing Speaker N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to abruptly adjourn the proceedings.
As the proceedings were about to commence, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi members were up on their feet and continued to insist on the passage of the resolution as a measure to instil confidence among the people of the region.
The Speaker who had adjourned the proceedings twice earlier, convened an emergency meeting of the floor leaders of all parties to elicit their views on the steps needed to conduct the business.
When the House resumed its proceedings later, the Treasury Benches urged TRS members to allow the business to continue so that the debate on Telangana could be taken up in the order of priority as decided by the Business Advisory Committee.
Leader of the House, J. Geetha Reddy tried to assuage the feelings of the agitated TRS members claiming that a debate on the sensitive issue at a time when the region was witnessing an agitation would send wrong signals outside.
Chief Minister K. Rosaiah intervened and expressed a willingness to allow a debate on issues relating to Telangana in a day or two after other priority issues such as floods, drought and the mining policy were discussed. However, with the TRS members insisting on a resolution and not a debate on the issue, the Speaker adjourned the proceedings for the day.
