Sushma accuses UPA of messing up Telangana issue

January 23, 2010 06:05 pm | Updated 06:05 pm IST - Hyderabad

The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj on Saturday alleged that the UPA government announces decisions before giving any serious thought on the burning issues.

“Any government generally after going through pro and cons of the issue takes decision, but this is (the UPA) first government which announced its decision for forming separate Telangana state without any serious thoughts on the decades old issue,” the BJP senior leader Sushwa Swaram told reporters here.

Taking a dig at the Congress, she said the Home Minister P. Chidambaram came out with a decision on December 9 on Telangana, but the UPA government suddenly changed its stand saying that due to the changed circumstances “there was a need to have more consultation on the issue and it wanted to arrive at consensus after discussing it with all political parties.”

The former union minister blamed the UPA government and Congress for the present “crisis” in Andhra Pradesh, adding, the matter was being dragged in the name of consensus.

She questioned, “how much time the Congress party wants to have for consensus on the decades old Telangana issue.”

Ms. Sushma Swaraj, who arrived here to address a public meeting at Nizam College Grounds organised by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in support of separate Telangana State, expressed confidence that the region would definitely get separate statehood.
