National Women’s Parliament begins today

Views of experts will be documented, which can be used for policy-making, says Assembly Speaker

VIJAYAWADA: The stage is set for the three-day National Women’s Parliament (NWP) to be conducted at Pavitra Sangamam near here from Friday.

The women’s parliament is expected to witness proven women delegates from across the world sharing their experiences and observations. The proceedings will be beamed to hundreds of colleges.

Over 10,000 girl students of higher education, women legislators, Members of Parliament, and corporate women leaders from India and abroad have confirmed their participation.

Social responsibility

The event, which is being organised by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in association with MIT School of Government, is aimed at igniting and strengthening the sense of social responsibility among women of India.

“The NWP belongs to women from all walks of life, cutting across caste, creed, religion, and boundaries,” said Assembly Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao.

“It will provide girl students access to women leaders who have made their mark in various walks of life. The views of experts and speakers on women empowerment will be documented, which can be used in policy-making,” he said.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will be the chief patron of the conference. Dr. Sivaprasada Rao will be chairman of the three-day conference.

The inaugural day session is on ‘Socio-political challenges in women empowerment’ and ‘Building bonds between mentor and mentees.’

Union Minister for Civil Aviation P. Ashok Gajapati Raju will be the chief guest. Mr. Naidu will grace the occasion. Minister from West Africa, Guinea, Camara Sanada Kaba; Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus; MP Kalvakuntla Kavita; MLAs D.K. Aruna and Tangirala Sowmya; US senator Aruna Miller; and actors Juhi Chawla and Jaya Sudha will address the gathering.

The second day’s session is on “Women’s status and decision-making power”.

Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan will participate as the chief guest. Legislative Council chairman A. Chakrapani and Minister for Legislative Affairs Yanamala Ramakrishnudu will address the session.

Run for empowerment

On the concluding day, a run for women empowerment will be organised from Swaraj Maidan to Tummalapalli Vari Kshetrayya Kalakshetram.

A session will be held on ‘Building own identity and vision of the future and women in politics: change-makers in global scenario.’

Union Ministers Smriti Zubin Irani and Nirmala Sitharaman will be the chief guests.
