VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will lay foundation stone for the Purushottapatnam Lift Irrigation (LI) scheme on January 5.

It is aimed at providing irrigation facility to 2.15 lakh acres in East Godavari district, besides meeting both drinking and industrial water needs of Visakhapatnam city.

The scheme proposes to lift 3,500 cusecs of water from the Godavari downstream Polavaram dam and pump into Polavaram left main canal, and then divert the water into the Yeleru reservoir.

The government took the initiative to complete Pattiseema lift irrigation scheme and divert Godavari water to the Krishna through the Polavaram right main canal.

Diversion of Godavari water helped in stabilising the ayacut both in West Godavari and Krishna districts and saving standing crop worth Rs. 2,500 crore amidst drought conditions during kharif.
