SRIKAKULAM: State unit president of CITU Ch. Narasinga Rao and vice- president D. Govinda Rao on Thursday said that struggle committees would be formed in all mandals and villages in north Andhra districts to oppose the proposed atomic power plant at Kovvada in Srikakulam district as it would pose threat to the entire region.

Should there be an accident, the impact would be felt in a radius of 170 km, from Chatrapur in Odisha to Kakinada of East Godavari district in AP.

The CITU organised ‘Atomic awareness programme’ in Chilakapalem of the district to garner the support of workers of various industries.

All industries between Etcherla and Pydibhimavaram would be in danger if atomic power plant was established, the leaders said.

“Now, many pharmaceutical companies are exporting products from Pydibhimavaram. International companies may not accept the products after the establishment of the plant out of fear of radiation,” said Mr. Narasinga Rao.

Human Rights Forum vice-president K.V. Jagannatha Rao said that the government might be happy with the speedy land acquisition process.

“But people of Kovvada may not be happy. The project will have larger impact on the many mandals. We oppose the project,” he added.
