A police officer in Andhra Pradesh stood out as an example for others in helping the needy by donating the organs of his wife who was declared “brain dead” following an accident.
“My wife is dead. But she would still help others if her organs are donated to the needy,” P. Chalam, a Deputy Superintendent of Police at Kadapa, told PTI on Wednesday.
Mr. Chalam’s wife P. Vijaya Gowri was walking home on the night of June 19 when an auto rickshaw hit her from behind.
She fell down unconscious and was taken to a hospital in Kurnool where doctors advised Mr. Chalam to shift her to a hospital in Hyderabad for better treatment.
She was admitted to the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) where the doctors tried their best to save her life.
They, however, declared her “brain dead” on the evening of June 21. Though Mr. Chalam and his daughters were shattered, they agreed to donate Ms. Vijaya Gowri’s organs to the needy after being counselled by Mohan Foundation, an NGO working for organ donation, and a Transplant Coordinator at the hospital.
Following the family’s consent, Ms. Vijaya Gowri’s kidneys, liver and eyes were retrieved and transplanted on needy patients on the night of June 22.
