Andhra Pradesh Congress president D Srinivas on Sunday dropped hints that he would contest the bypoll to the Nizamabad assembly seat scheduled to be held soon.

“Party workers have strongly demanded that I contest the bypoll. A decision on this matter would be taken by party president Sonia Gandhi. As far as I am concerned, I am guided by wishes of the activists,” he said, addressing a party meeting in the town on Sunday.

Mr. Srinivas represented Nizamabad in the assembly for a long time but lost to his BJP rival Y Lakshminarayana in the 2009 assembly elections.

Mr. Lakshminarayana, however, quit as MLA in February last in support of the separate Telangana demand. The by-election should be held in six months.

Mr. Srinivas has reportedly wanted to contest the coming State Legislative Council poll from Hyderabad but the Congress high command decided give the tickets to local leaders.
