The fisheries officials have completed the enumeration of people whose livelihood has been affected due to the annual fishing ban that came into force from the midnight of April 14.
The State government offers ₹4,000 to each fisherman to compensate for the loss of livelihood for the 61-day ban period.
Assistant Director of Fisheries Mr. Suresh told The Hindu that the enumeration of the affected people had been completed in Krishna district by Sunday. “A total of 9,200 people have lost their source of income due to the fishing ban in Krishna district. They engage in fishing on motorised boats in the Bay of Bengal. In Diviseema alone, 4,500 beneficiaries have been identified for the payment of compensation,” said Mr. Suresh.
The State government needs to provide ₹40 crore compensation to observe the annual fishing ban across the nine coastal districts in the State.
Krishna Collector A.Md.Imtiaz will review the enumeration data and forward it to the State government for the release of funds.
According to fisheries officials, the compensation is likely to be released by early June and directly deposited in the bank account of the beneficiaries.
