A 12-year-old girl was set ablaze in Badinehall village of Kowthalam mandal in Kurnool district.

The condition of the girl is said to be critical. She was first admitted to Adoni general hospital and then was moved to Kurnool government general hospital. The accused is on the run.

Police identified the accused as Mohiuddin Saheb, who has reportedly been harassing the victim for several months. When the girl complained to her parents about the harassment, her parents reportedly warned Mohiuddin to stay away from the girl. As retribution, he poured petrol on her and set her on fire on Saturday.

Adoni Circle Inspector M. Murali has said that the accused is a married man with four children. An FIR has been registered in the Kowthalam police station under Section 307 (attempted murder), Nirbhaya Act and SC-ST Atrocities Act.

Third degree burns

Kurnool government general hospital officials have told The Hindu that the girl has suffered third degree burns on 65 to 70% of her body and is in a critical condition.
