11.34 kg of gold seized

Seizure from four passengers; haul valued at Rs.3.65 crore

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Air Customs Intelligence wing seized 11.340 kg of smuggled-in gold from four passengers who arrived at Calicut International Airport, Karipur, from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday morning. The gold will fetch around Rs.3.65 crore in the market.

Mohammed Shamsir from Kannur; K. Shihabuddin from Morayur, near Malappuram; C. Hafiz from Pinarayi, Kannur; and K.V. Noushad from Koothuparamba, Kannur, were arrested in connection with the seizure. Shamsir was carrying 1.775 kg gold in the form of a loudspeaker transformer coil. The other threhad hidden gold biscuits, 82 in all, in emergency lamps. DRI officials said they acted on a tip-off. Shihabuddin reached Karipur on an Air India Express flight from Abu Dhabi, whereas Hafiz and Noushad arrived on an Air India flight from Sharjah.
