The Lok Sabha was adjourned twice when members from the Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) and Telugu Desam Party raised slogans demanding special status for A.P.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley assured them that the government was looking at their demand. “Some members have concerns over particular issues. The Government stands by its commitment. We are trying to find a solution to these issues,” Mr. Jaitley said. His assurance was followed by MPs seeking a timeline for resolving the matter and when this was not forthcoming, they raised slogans such as “we want justice” and “we demand special status.”

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said that after the assurance by Mr. Jaitley, members should allow business to go on.

“The demands of Andhra Pradesh are under consideration. I equest my friends to accept the assurance of the Finance Minister,” he said.

“I am assuring the MPs that the government is committed to whatever has been assured. We are with the people of A.P. Give us some time. Please allow the House to function,” he added.

Earlier, while members of the YSRCP trooped into the Well holding placards demanding special category for A.P. following the creation of Telangana, those from the TDP stood in the aisles and raised slogans.

An earlier version of this article wrongly expanded YSRCP as Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Congress Party. The correct expansion is Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party. The error is regretted.
