Security and surveillance at the establishments of the Department of Atomic Energy will be enhanced after the incident at the Kaiga Atomic Power Station where drinking water was contaminated with Tritium because of a “mischievous act” of an employee, said Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Srikumar Banerjee on Friday.
“There are many interfaces at our installations. The movement of people inside our plants is recorded…..we have cameras, and their movements are constantly watched, but we are enhancing it [surveillance],” said Mr. Banerjee, who is also Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy. Mr. Banerjee said the investigation was in the hands of the police.
Asked about the security of nuclear power plants and their vulnerability to a terror strike, Mr. Banerjee said: “In the designing of a nuclear reactor, even the possibility of an aircraft impact is taken into account.”
