Claiming “full support” of Parliament, the government told the Supreme Court on Friday that students of Kendriya Vidyalayas can learn Sanskrit this academic year without having to take exams and study German as an optional subject.
The government made this suggestion before a Bench of Justices Anil R. Dave and Kurian Joseph after considering the concern raised by the court on the stress caused to students by the sudden switch from German to Sanskrit towards the end of the academic year.
“The matter was raised in Parliament yesterday [on Thursday]. No exam will be held for students studying Sanskrit as the third language this year. Students can also learn German as an optional subject,” Attorney-General Mukul Rohatgi submitted, placing on record a letter dated December 4 conveying the intent of the Ministry.
