The Maharashtra police are better prepared to fight terror today than they were a year ago, outgoing Director-General of Police (DGP) S.S. Virk, told journalists here on Saturday, on his retirement from service.
Anami Roy, former DGP and current DG Anti-Corruption would be taking over the additional charge of DGP. Mr. Roy had to leave the top post after the Bombay High Court quashed his appointment. Mr. Virk, a 1970 batch IPS officer, took over the DGPs post on March 13 this year, at a time when the State was grappling with the ravages of 26/11.
“There were so many fears and apprehensions about my appointment. My first challenge was to tackle terror in Mumbai. Our first priority was to build the capabilities of our force. I can say that today we are better prepared than we were a year ago. We have set up special units in each district to fight terror attacks. There is however a lot of potential for improvement,” he said.
He praised the State police, whose response to the Mumbai terror attacks had come under the scanner and led to the transfer of the city’s former Police Commissioner Hasan Gafoor.
