Parliament panel to study nuclear safety

April 02, 2011 04:09 am | Updated November 17, 2021 03:54 am IST - NEW DELHI:

In the wake of growing public demands for a review of nuclear safety following the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear accident in Japan, Parliament's Standing Committee on Science and Technology will meet on April 5 to examine what India should do to ensure its own civil nuclear energy programme is safe.

Pointing out that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured both the Houses of Parliament that direction was given for a detailed review of the safety aspects of the nuclear plants, Rajya Sabha MP Jabir Husain had written to the Chairman of the panel, T. Subbirami Reddy to convene the meeting at the earliest.

Mr. Husain suggested that officials of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, the Nuclear Power Corporation, and the Department of Atomic Energy be invited to detail the steps being taken as a follow up to the Prime Minister's directive.
