Firing began from the Pakistani side aimed at Joda village, half a kilometre from the border, at 1.15 a.m. on Saturday. Hundred-odd Gujjar families are leaving the village in lorries and milk vans, but they have nowhere to go. Every now and then, they look up at the sky with dread to spot a shell.
“This is our life,” said Shahdeen Ahmad, 62, whose son Mohammad Akram, 30, and grandson Aslam, 6, were killed on Friday night. The people sat crouched against their mud huts to escape the splinters. At 4.10 a.m., a massive shell fell amid them.
