Pakistan team coming on Wednesday

A six-member Pakistani team is arriving here on Wednesday for the Foreign Secretary-level talks, official sources said.

The team is led by Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir and the Director General [Joint Secretary] South Asia, the Director India, Spokesperson Abdul Basit and two other officials are the other members.

The team is expected to interact with several persons, including Hurryiat Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the same day.

The next day, talks are likely to be held in the forenoon at the Hyderabad House, venue for talks with foreign dignitaries. It will be followed by a lunch hosted by Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao.

The team’s itinerary includes a courtesy call on External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and the timings are being worked out.

The sources said as of now no joint media interaction was planned and both sides would hold separate press conferences, with Mr. Bashir likely to interact with the media at the Pakistan High Commission. The sources also discounted the possibility of a joint statement that would set out a road map for the future as was the case with the Foreign Secretary-level talks in 2004 that decided to extend the dialogue at the Foreign Office level to include other line Ministries under what is known as the Composite Dialogue format.
