Artists have protested against the sudden transfer of Venu Vasudevan, Director-General of the National Museum, the abrupt removal of Lalit Kala Akademi chairperson Kalyan Chakravarty and non-renewal of Ruchira Gose’s directorship of the National Craft Museum.
An online petition protesting the government’s decisions has been initiated by former bureaucrat Ashok Vajpayi, who was also chairperson of the Lalit Kala Akademi. “To send efficient people out, sends a wrong signal to artists and those concerned with the arts and raises concerns about the intentions of the government,” Mr. Vajpayi said. The petition has been signed by historian Romila Thapar, art critic Ranjit Hoskote, poet and director Gulzar, playwright Girish Karnad, among others. The petitioners intend to take the matter to President Pranab Mukherjee.
