After a direction from the Central Information Commissioner (CIC) asking the Gujarat and Delhi universities to provide details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s education and degrees, the Gujarat University produced on Sunday a mark sheet that showed he had scored 62.3 per cent in M.A. in political science as an external candidate in 1983.

“Narendra Damodardas Modi passed his M.A. in Political Science in 1983 with first class, securing 499 out of 800 marks, which comes to 62.3 per cent, as an external student,” Gujarat University’s Vice-Chancellor M.N. Patel told the media here.

However, the university has no records of his graduation degree. Mr. Patel said, “Mr. Modi was enrolled in the Gujarat University for post-graduation only, so we don’t have details of his B.A.”

Asked why the varsity had rejected dozens of applications under the Right to Information Act, he said, “The details of the marks and degree can only be shared with the candidate himself, and the varsity does not maintain records beyond 20 years.”

“In the last seven years, as many as 70 applications on Mr. Modi’s education degree and qualification details under RTI were rejected by the Gujarat University and now all of a sudden, the VC has found his mark sheet and shared it with the media,” Congress spokesman Shaktisinh Gohil said.

“How could he get admission in M.A. in Gujarat University? While filing applications for M.A., he must have attached his B.A. degree. Why is the university not disclosing it,” Mr. Gohil asked.

Giving details of the marks break-up, Mr. Patel said, “In the first year of M.A., he secured 237 out of 400 marks, in the second year, he scored 262 out of 400.”

The break-up of marks in the second year shows that Mr. Modi obtained 64 in political science, 62 in European and social political thought, 69 in modern India/political analysis, and 67 in political psychology.

According to Mr. Modi’s brother Prahlad, he had enrolled for pre-science in Visnagar in Mehsana district but subsequently had shifted to Ahmedabad.

Date of birth row

Meanwhile, as per the university records, Mr. Modi’s date of birth is mentioned as August 29, 1949 while as per Mr. Modi’s website and official records, it is September 17, 1950.

“Will Mr. Modi clarify which one is genuine and which is fake? The country would certainly want to know the details of his degrees, educational qualifications and real DoB,” Mr. Gohil said.
