The National Investigation Agency (NIA), set up in the aftermath of Mumbai terror strikes last year, has been allocated Rs. 16.33 crore in the general budget for 2010-11, a marginal hike of over Rs. one crore from the last fiscal.
The NIA, which came into existence in February last year with the appointment of Radha Vinod Raju as its first Director General, has to accomplish important tasks under the Union Home Ministry’s Action Plan which includes probe on the activities of US terror suspect David Headley.
The budget, presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, pegged Rs 16.33 crore for NIA to meet establishment related expenditure. In last fiscal, the budget for the organisation was Rs 15 crore.
The NIA has been asked to fill up all posts and finalise issues like declaring NIA a police station and setting up of special courts.
Nearly 100 posts were created for NIA last year after the agency completed formulation of recruitment rules in consultation with Department of Personnel and Training and Legislative department.
