The Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday dubbed as ‘Black Day’ for democracy the suspension of 25 party MPs from Lok Sabha as her party said the Narendra Modi government is implementing “Gujarat model” of democracy in New Delhi.

Ms. Gandhi, who appeared agitated soon after Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan’s decision to suspend 25 Congress MPs, said, “It is a Black Day for democracy.”

“Like in Gujarat the opposition members used to get suspended, similar thing is happening here. It is the Gujarat model which is being implemented,” party’s Leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge told reporters.

He nodded affirmatively when asked whether the remaining Congress members in the Lower House would boycott the House for five days as a mark of protest over the disciplinary action.

Congress whip of the party K.C. Venugopal said the remaining members were most likely to boycott the House and discussions were on with other Opposition parties.

Meanwhile, the TMC and the AAP said they will boycott the House to express solidarity toward the suspended members.
