The Congress and NCP, which parted ways following disagreement over seat-sharing for the assembly election, have managed to poll albeit separately more votes than they had polled together in the May Lok Sabha election.
Statistics put out by the Election Commission show that while the Congress polled 17.90 per cent of votes as compared to 18.10 it secured in the Lok Sabha and the NCP polled 17.9 per cent of votes as compared to 16 per cent in the Lok Sabha. Together they have got 35.2 per cent of votes as contrast to 34.10 per cent in the Lok Sabha.
The combine secured only six of the 48 seats. In contrast with just over one per cent more votes between the two the parties have secured 84 of the 288 seats in the assembly.
Likewise the BJP and Shiv Sena, who had fought the Lok Sabha as a combine and the Assembly separately, have polled less votes in the state election than in the general election held over five months ago.
In the Lok Sabha the BJP-Sena combine polled 50.20 per cent votes securing an unprecedented 42 of the 48 seats. In contrast the BJP along with its four allies and the Shiv Sena which fought on its own secured 48.60 per cent of votes.
Though in terms of percentage of polls these parties have polled almost two per cent less than their score in the Lok Sabha, they have between the two of them have managed to bag 186 seats in a house of 288 members.
