Krishna meets Nemwang, enquires about Constitution drafting

India on Sunday said it wanted to see a stable and democratic Nepal and expressed confidence that the country would be able to meet the deadline of drafting its new Constitution by May 2010.

This was stated by External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna when he met Nepal’s Constituent Assembly chairman Subhash Nemwang here.

The External Affairs Minister, who is here on a three-day visit, met Nemwang at the Constituent Assembly hall and enquired about the process of drafting the new Constitution. Nepal has set May 28, 2010 as deadline for accomplishing the task of drafting the Constitution. Mr. Krishna expressed confidence that Nepal will be able to draft the Constitution within the stipulated time frame.

He said India wanted to see a stable and democratic Nepal. The minister also said Nepal and India have joint security concerns. There are commonalities of interest between the political parties of the two countries, he pointed out.

The minister also held a meeting with members of the Constitutional Committee and a select group of 601—strong Constituent Assembly.

Mr. Nemwang appreciated India for extending support to Nepal’s democratic movement and transitional period and expressed hope that the relations between the two countries will be strengthened in the days to come.
