Indonesia may execute Indian on drug charges

Gurdip Singh from Punjab is among 14 persons to face the firing squad

July 28, 2016 12:07 am | Updated November 17, 2021 02:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

An Indian national is among several drug convicts likely to be executed by Indonesia on Friday. Gurdip Singh from Punjab, accused of smuggling heroin, is among 14 persons to face the firing squad as part of the government of Indonesia’s planned offensive against drug network.

Amnesty International has issued an urgent appeal against the executions saying that the action will put Indonesia on the “wrong side of history”. There was no official statement from the government on the case of Mr. Singh with sources indicating that India is aware of President Joko Widodo’s determination to deliver capital punishment to drug convicts and Mr. Singh appears to have “exhausted legal options.”

Mr. Singh was arrested in the case in 2004.
