B B Misra, a senior IPS officer who had earlier handled some of the most high-profile CBI cases like the fodder scam and Nandigram firing in West Bengal, was appointed as the chief investigator of the IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal by the Supreme Court on Friday.

Mr. Misra, a 1983-batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre police officer, is currently posted as Deputy Director General (Operations) in the headquarters of the Narcotics Control Bureau in New Delhi.

The officer, over the last over three years at the NCB, has headed some of the most important cases in the drugs enforcement domain of the country which have an overseas connection.

Mr. Misra, who is tipped to join the paramilitary force on promotion in the near future, said the new assignment given to him by the apex court is “very prestigious”.

“I am very thankful to the Supreme Court and Justice Mudgal for reposing their faith in me. I will try to do my best,” Mr. Misra told PTI.

Mr. Misra has served the CBI as a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) at its Patna office between 2000-07 when the fodder scam cases were moved to Ranchi for trial.

Apart from this, Mr. Misra was also the investigating officer of cases like the Nandigram firing and other mining related probes done by CBI.

The officer is expected to join the IPL probe team under Justice Mukul Mudgal soon.

The 58-year-old officer is a recipient of the Indian Police Medal (in 2000) and the President’s Police Medal (2007).

The apex court on Friday directed a probe to be conducted against N Srinivasan and 12 prominent players in IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal under the overall supervision of Justice Mudgal.
