Govt expects Rs 25,000 cr foreign funds in textile sector in 5 years

The Centre on Tuesday said that it expects foreign investments to the tune of around Rs 25,000 crore in the textile sector over the next five years.

“Around Rs 25,000 crore of foreign investment is expected to be made in the country over the next five years,” Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran said after inaugurating the National Handloom Expo here.

The minister hoped that the steps taken by the government would increase foreign investment in the country.

He said steps are also being taken to set up the proposed integrated textile park at Kancheepuram exclusively for the silk industry.

“We are waiting for dates from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to lay the foundation stone for the Park,” Mr. Maran said.

The government has so far sanctioned 40 textile parks in different parts of the country, which are aimed at providing world-class infrastructure to meet international environmental and social standards.

Referring to the Handloom expo which he inaugurated on Tuesday, Mr. Maran said the Textiles Ministry was conducting it in 22 places across the country.

He expressed the hope that each exhibition would generate revenue of about Rs two-three crore.

The Expo in the city would house 110 stalls and showcase cotton and silk sarees, besides home furnishings.

Handloom development corporations of various states, primary handloom weavers cooperative societies, Self Help Groups working for the development of handloom sector are also participating in the Exhibition, which will go on till January 4.
