Accused in the Russian girl’s rape case, John Fernandes, a politician from Colva coastal village of south Goa, finally surrendered before the Crime Branch of State police on Wednesday.
He was absconding since he was denied anticipatory bail. The case was registered at Colva police station. The alleged atrocity happened on the Colva beach on December 1.
The anticipatory bail granted by a local magistrate’s court to the accused was cancelled by the High Court. After the Supreme Court also declined to entertain his plea for anticipatory bail, the Goa police issued a look-out notice.
After the victim wrote to Russian Consulate in Mumbai alleging cover up of the case, the State police handed over the case to Crime branch. It immediately moved a petition before the Goa Bench of Bombay High Court pleading for cancellation of the anticipatory bail and sought custodial interrogation of the accused.
A spokesperson of the Crime Branch said here on Wednesday that he would be produced before the court on Thursday.
